WATCH Tornado hits Hartlepool as incredible images emerge
Local residents were shocked as they witnessed the twister form during a storm in the area, around midday. Many took to Twitter to share photos of the weather phenomenon. A Met Office spokesman said: "The weather at the moment is the perfect set-up for the funnel clouds. "It is the second time in a matter of days one has been spotted. "Thunderstorms are likely to push eastwards today mainly confined to the central spine of the country, before continuing to the South East." Britain is hit by about 34 twisters every year, and scientists say sightings may be getting more frequent. They claim London and Reading have a 6% chance of being hit this summer, while Bristol, Birmingham and Ipswich have a 3% chance. The worst tornado to hit the UK was in Birmingham in 2005, when 19 people were injured and £140million worth of damages were caused.
